In Memory of Florence Wauters: An Example of the Kindness We want to See

Florence Wauters has been a cherished person and professional, who has left us in September 2023- too soon for those who have had the privilege to know her and are still inspired by her kindness and resilience. During her long fight against a disease, she has never stopped to smile.

Her dedication as a PDA volunteer was outstanding. She served several years on the scientific planning committee of the PDA Biomanufacturing Conference and was very active in the preparation of PDA technical documents for vaccines.

Florence was driven by exceptional values and behaviors, people-oriented, always collaborative, humble, respectful, and constructive, with remarkable listening and influencing skills. When talking about her with former and recent colleagues, these traits are consistently mentioned, along with her competence in several areas, built during her career in the pharmaceutical industry, including development of several life-saving vaccines. Thanks to this knowledge, she has provided critical contributions to regulatory affairs and CMC advocacy, actively working in cross-company groups, with a focus on a number of topics of major impact on public health, including pharmaceutical biomanufacturing innovations and industry learnings after the COVID pandemic.

Florence worked for 15 years in the biopharmaceutical industry with a focus on pharmaceutical process development, regulatory affairs, and project management. She joined MSD in 2016 after various positions in the area of drug product development and development technologies within GSK.

In our experience, Florence’s acts of kindness were typically done in silence, with no expectation of anything in return- we cannot count her generous advice, helpful information, offers of connection to her broad network, and brilliant ideas. This letter is an attempt to give visibility to a beautiful person and friend, who will certainly be an example for current and next generations of professionals. Thank you, Florence!
