Training Effectiveness: What’s Your Design Strategy?

Bethesda, MD
Ask a Question

How hard can it be to write a 10-question paper and pencil test and call it a knowledge check? Not very. Knowledge assessments continue to be the most commonly used assessment tool, yet they’ve become overly used, misused and, as a result, have become ineffective for measuring true knowledge comprehension. Why? Due to its relative ease of use, it’s convenient to skip the fundamentals of training evaluation design.

Short of taking a semester long course on testing and evaluation, this one-day training course condenses evaluation strategies and techniques into an abbreviated focus and attention around two key design concepts: validity and reliability. Attendees will leave this training course with tools to:

  • Create a design plan for identifying where assessments are needed and type of assessment to use
  • Construct “test blue prints” to ensure content validity
  • Conduct item analyses to provide test reliability
  • Develop valid test questions following basic principles of good test construction

After training course registration, participants will be asked to complete a short needs assessment survey. The in-advance information will be used to prioritize content and focus classroom time appropriately.

Please note: Assessment for performance demonstrations is not included. This is not a Train-the-Trainer course for writing only knowledge checks; however, the industry use of knowledge checks will be discussed.
