The one-day conference will not only draw on the development of Operational Excellence (OPEX) in the pharmaceutical industry but provide first-hand insights on the current state and latest research results. Hereby, the Institute of Technology Management would like to celebrate the 15th anniversary of its OPEX Benchmarking approach. In addition to these research perspectives, guest speakers will share their impressions of the industry's pathway to OPEX. Therefore, participants will experience what it takes to become World Class in manufacturing.

Welcome & Introduction to OPEX

9:30 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.
OPEX in Pharma: From Innocence to World Leading
This session will draw on the development of Operational Excellence in the pharmaceutical industry and how it differs from other industries. It will show what drove and still drives the industry to engage in Operational Excellence initiatives. Participants will thereby take a broad perspective on Operational Excellence and take a glimpse at what is ahead.

St. Gallen Benchmarking & Assessment Approach
The St.Gallen Benchmarking started off in 2004. Compared to other benchmarking approaches, it takes a holistic perspective on Operational Excellence. Additionally, its determination of high performers follows a particular logic to allow for a meaningful comparison. Therefore, it is no surprise that the St.Gallen Benchmarking has been a success story ever since. Participants will gain insights in the assessment approach, how it differs and what advantages this brings about.

Pfizer's Integrated Manufacturing Excellence Approach
This session will provide valuable insights from the industry. Annie Sebastien, Vice President Production System, will talk about Pfizer’s journey toward Operational Excellence. By doing so, she will explain and share experiences from the evolution of Pfizer’s Integrated Manufacturing Excellence System. Moreover, an outlook on the next evolution will not be missing. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from other’s experience and thereby avoid pitfalls on their very own journey toward Operational Excellence.

Learnings from FDA's Quality metrics Initiative
The FDA will look back on the Quality Metrics Initiative, highlighting experiences throughout the years. Additionally, the FDA will draw on the current state of the initiative as well as its future development and will highlight the importance of the program from an agency perspective.

1:45 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.
St. Gallen FDA Reserach Insights
Since 2016, the Institute of Technology Management at the University of St.Gallen conducted research for the FDA. A review of the first two years of research will show the development of the Pharmaceutical Production System Model and highlight the most insightful research findings. Moreover, latest results from research year three will be presented, drawing on the relation between Operational Excellence capabilities and performance as well as the relation between effectiveness and efficiency. Lastly, participants will gain insight into the most recent research collaboration with Dun & Bradstreet.
