Reimar Johne is a scientist at the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) in Berlin, Germany, where he leads the German National Reference Laboratory for Monitoring Viruses in Bivalve Molluscs.
He obtained his doctor of veterinary medicine at the University of Leipzig in 2000 with a topic on polyomaviruses. In 2007, he moved to the BfR, where he established a research group on foodborne viruses. In addition, he was bestowed extraordinary professor for veterinary virology at the University of Leipzig in 2012.
Dr. Johne has participated in national and international projects on zoonoses, the global food chain, virus contamination in agriculture and food, and the molecular characterisation of zoonotic viruses. His current research interests are in the investigation of hepatitis E virus transmission through the food chain, the development of detection systems for viruses in food and the analysis of the zoonotic potential of enteric viruses.
