The filling of injectables into containers (vials, cartridges, syringes, capsules) is a process which is developed and validated. Typically, there are IPCs measured like weight, fill volume, or stopper position. Currently there are technologies which allow for detection of many more parameters up to a situation where each individual container can collect and store the parameters of the filling line which have direct impact on the quality but also storing data like date, batch number of the formulation, container, the components, etc. Therefore, it seems possible that each container has all data which are needed to assess the quality and the history of the filling process. The information on the single container can be used both within the manufacturing process through intelligent machinery, as at a later stage with connected drug delivery devices and smart packaging solutions.

The session will deal with new opportunities in the product manufacturing and design process through applying new electronic technologies including connectivity.
Areas that will be addressed in this session are:

  • The Fill-Finish-Process of injectables and opportunities through smart primary containers and intelligent machinery
  • The use of sensor technology in the area of product design and human factor studies for drug delivery devices
  • Drug Discovery Process - Using High Performance Computing and Artificial Intelligence

P3: Patient Benefit and Applications in Connected Drug Delivery

With miniaturization, powerful electronics, sensors, and data processing capabilities, it is possible for patients to directly communicate with pharmaceutical products. This is more convenient for patients and allows for better collection of objective data. From the data of many patients it will be possible to better understand the specifics of the disease of the patients which will allow for more efficient treatments. This will have an impact not only on patients and pharma industry, but on the healthcare system itself. Challenges are data protection (who owns the data), insurance companies, and technology providers. The goal of this session is to share the current status of the technologies, show actual cases, and discuss what challenges and benefits may occur in the next 5-10 years. Active participation from the audience is expected.
