Govind Rao, Ph.D
Govind Rao is Professor of Chemical & Biochemical Engineering and Director of the Center for Advanced Sensor Technology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. His Ph.D. degree was from Drexel University in Chemical Engineering. Dr. Rao's research has focused on applications of fluorescence spectroscopy to bioprocess engineering. His lab has developed next-generation sensors for low-cost non-invasive monitoring of oxygen, pH and pCO2 in bioreactors. He has published over 130 papers in professional journals. Dr. Rao has received several awards, including the Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation, Outstanding Teaching and Research Awards from UMBC, the Van Lanen Award from the American Chemical Society, the Gaden Award from Biotechnology & Bioengineering, the University System of Maryland Regents Award for Excellence in Research and he has been named a 2003 Innovator of the Year by the Maryland Daily Record. Dr. Rao has several patents and these have been licensed to Fluorometrix, which he co-founded. Dr. Rao has served as the Chair of the Biotechnology Division of the American Chemical Society and on the Editorial Board of several prominent journals. In 2007, he was elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Antonio Moreira, Ph.D.
Dr. Antonio Moreira is Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at UMBC since 1997. He was Chairman of the Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Department at UMBC from 1990-1995 and Associate Provost for Academic Affairs from 1995-1997. Prior to 1990, Dr. Moreira spent nearly ten years in the private sector, with senior management positions both in the food industry with International Flavors and Fragrances, Inc. and in the pharmaceutical/ biotechnology area with Schering-Plough Corporation. He has significant experience with R&D, scale-up and introduction to commercialization of biotechnology products, such as the blockbuster alpha interferon biomolecule. Dr. Moreira holds a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Porto, Portugal, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Moreira was the Founding President of the Chesapeake Bay Area Chapter of ISPE and was Chair of the Council of Biotechnology Centers of the BIO Industry Organization (2001-2003). He is a frequent lecturer for the PDA-TRI courses and received the PDA James Agalloco award in 1997. He has authored or co-authored over 150 scientific publications and presentations. He has started two consulting firms and is a graduate of Leadership Maryland, Class of 1998.
Kurt Brorson, Ph.D.
Dr. Kurt Brorson is a staff scientist in FDA/CDER's Division of Monoclonal Antibodies, Office of Biotechnology Products. Kurt Brorson received a B.A. in biology from the University of Chicago (Chicago IL) in 1984 and Ph.D. in molecular biology from the California Institute of Technology (Pasadena CA) in 1990. After a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship at the NIH, he joined FDA in 1992 as a staff fellow and was promoted to a staff scientist in 1999. In addition to review, inspection, training and policy activities, he conducts research on viral safety and other product quality issues associated with biotechnology products. He has won numerous internal awards from FDA, CBER and CDER including the year 2000 "FDA excellence in review science" as a member of the licensing group that "enabled rapid approval of an effective treatment of Crohn's disease". He is the author of more than 40 scientific journal articles and book chapters, and is an associate editor for the journal Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry. He is a member of PDA, the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Society for Microbiology. As a member of PDA, he was instrumental for publication of PDA's Technical Report 41: "Virus Filtration", and an associated test method for classifying small and large virus retentive filters.
Anurag Rathore, Ph.D.
Dr. Anurag S. Rathore is a consultant of Biotech CMC Issues. He is also a faculty at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India. His previous roles included management positions at Amgen Inc., Thousand Oaks, California and Pharmacia Corp., St. Louis, Missouri. His areas of interest include process development, scale-up, technology transfer, process validation, process analytical technology and quality by design. He has authored more than 100 publications and presentations in these areas and serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards for Biotechnology Progress, BioPharm International, Pharmaceutical Technology Europe and Separation and Purification Reviews. Dr. Rathore has edited books titled Quality by Design for Biopharmaceuticals: Perspectives and Case Studies (2009), Elements of Biopharmaceutical Production (2007), Process Validation (2005), Electrokinetic Phenomena (2004) and Scale-up and Optimization in Preparative Chromatography (2003). He has a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Yale University.
Mia Ricci is a young publishing professional with a background in journalism. She was born and raised in Jakarta, Indonesia and moved to New York City in 1999 to attend the City College of the City University of New York. Mia graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and a Certificate in Publishing. She has also received several awards during her studies, including the L. L. Richard Guyluy Award and the Norman Jones Journalism Award. Since graduation, Mia has been following her passion in journalism and publishing. She has worked for The Green Magazine, Time Warner Books Group, and is currently working for John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
